Sanmar Delivers Eco-Friendly Boğaçay Class Tug “GARGANO” to Italy’s Rimorchitori Napoletani

Sanmar Shipyards, one of the world’s leading tugboat builders, has delivered another of its advanced and environmentally responsible Boğaçay Class tugs to the Italian towage operator Rimorchitori Napoletani. The vessel, previously known as BOĞAÇAY LXXX, has been renamed GARGANO by her new owners.

Built at Sanmar’s state-of-the-art, eco-conscious shipyard in Türkiye, GARGANO is based on the RAmparts 2400SX-MKII design, developed by the renowned Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd. This 24.4-meter-long, 12-meter-beam tug delivers a bollard pull exceeding 70 tons and a free running speed of over 12.5 knots, enabling it to perform a wide range of demanding operations including ship-handling, coastal towing, and escort duties.

Reflecting Sanmar’s strong commitment to sustainability, GARGANO is among the most environmentally advanced Boğaçay Class tugs to date, equipped with IMO Tier III compliant engines and a high level of machinery automation to enhance operational efficiency and minimize emissions.

“Our latest Boğaçay Class tugs achieve a new level of low-emission, low environmental impact tugboat operation,” said Rüçhan Çıvgın, Commercial Director of Sanmar Shipyards. “GARGANO represents the latest in our ongoing drive to drastically reduce the environmental footprint of the global tug and towing industry.”

This delivery strengthens the long-term partnership between Sanmar and Rimorchitori Napoletani, which began in 2017 with the delivery of the Sirapinar Class tug VIVARA, a slightly smaller sister vessel to the Boğaçay series.
Founded in Naples in the late 19th century, Rimorchitori Napoletani continues to modernize its fleet with innovative and sustainable vessels from Sanmar’s production line.

Beyond the Boğaçay Class, Sanmar continues to push boundaries in maritime innovation, developing fully electric, LNG-fuelled, methanol, hybrid, and even autonomous tugboat designs — underscoring its vision for a greener, smarter future in towage operations.
