Sanmar Shipyards has launched the first of two groundbreaking dual-fuel methanol escort tugs it is building for KOTUG Canada, a joint venture between KOTUG International B.V. and Horizon Maritime Inc.

Based on the RAsalvor 4400-DFM design by Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd, these revolutionary tugs will escort tankers from the Port of Vancouver to the Pacific Ocean under the Trans Mountain Expansion Project (TMEP).

The vessels will be the most powerful escort tugs in Canada, capable of 120 tonnes bollard pull, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and underwater radiated noise. They will also feature long-range towing, anchor-handling, rescue, and salvage capabilities, and are equipped with ABS FFV 1 firefighting systems and advanced oil spill response equipment.

KOTUG Canada has partnered with the Sc’ianew First Nation from Beecher Bay to deliver this service, creating long-term economic opportunities, training, and incorporating Indigenous stewardship into marine operations.

Ali Gürün, SANMAR Vice Chairman & CEO, said: “The launch of this radically new tug marks a major step forward in alternative fuels and environmental protection. At SANMAR, we are proud to be leading the way to a cleaner future.”

Ard-Jan Kooren, President & CEO of KOTUG International, added: “This is more than a milestone for KOTUG Canada— it is a defining moment for the maritime industry. These vessels prove sustainability and performance can go hand in hand.”

Sanmar has strategically positioned itself at the forefront of low- and zero-emission tug innovation. Its ElectRA class all-electric tugs already operate across Europe and the Americas, setting new standards in sustainable towage.
