Bahrain – Türkiye’s leading tugboat builder Sanmar Shipyards has delivered two new powerful and highly manoeuvrable azimuth tractor tugs to global towage operator Svitzer, marking another milestone in their nearly 20-year partnership.
The new tugs, previously known as DELIÇAY XVI and DELIÇAY XVII during construction, have been renamed SVITZER MANAMA and SVITZER AWAL and will operate in Bahrain.
Based on the TRAktor-Z 2500SX design developed exclusively for Sanmar by Canadian naval architect Robert Allan Ltd, each tug measures 25.3 metres in length, with a 12-metre beam, 4.45-metre depth, and 6.55-metre draft. Capable of delivering 80 tonnes of bollard pull and reaching 12.5 knots free-running speed, both vessels are also equipped with Fi-Fi 1 fire-fighting systems, enhancing safety and operational flexibility.
Designed for harbour ship-handling and towing operations, the twin Z-drive propeller tugs offer exceptional control and manoeuvrability thanks to their optimised hull form and appendage configuration, refined through extensive model testing and computational fluid dynamics analysis.
The partnership between Sanmar and Svitzer has produced some of the industry’s most pioneering tug designs, including the world’s first remotely operated tug SVITZER HERMOD in 2016 and the zero-emission all-electric tug SVITZER INGRID from Sanmar’s exclusive ElectRA series, delivered earlier this year.
İpek Gürün, Corporate Strategy Director at Sanmar Shipyards, said:
Svitzer operates in 141 ports and 40 terminals across 37 countries, with maritime experience that goes back centuries. We are proud that they continue to choose Sanmar for modern, efficient, and environmentally responsible tugboats that support their global operations.
